Synopsis: Set in London in 1663 the story follows the rise to royal patronage of profligate physician Robert Merivel and his subsequent downfall when, in a marriage of convenience, he falls in love with the king's mistress. Stripped of his rank he goes out into the world and rediscovers his vocation working in a Quaker asylum.Synopsis: Based on the novel by Rose Tremain. Set in the reign of Charles II, tells the story of a profligate physician who loses his royal patronage when he falls in love with the King's mistress with whom he has contracted a marriage of convenience. Stripped of his rank and forced to leave the country estate he received on their marriage, he finds shelter in a Quaker mental asylum.
